Getting started

Everything you need to create your first event on canberra.events. From writing a great listing to managing your attendees.

Create your event

Head to the create page to get started. You'll need to fill in a few key details:

Title

Keep it clear and specific. "Canberra Pottery Workshop: Beginner Bowls" works better than "Pottery Class."

Date and time

Include both start and end times so people can plan their day.

Location

Add the full address so attendees can find you easily. The map preview will help people work out how to get there.

Description

This is your chance to sell the experience. What will people do? What should they bring? Who is it for? Be specific and welcoming.

Category and price

Pick the category that fits best and set the price (or mark it as free). This helps people find your event when browsing.

Make it stand out

A great listing gets more RSVPs. Here are a few tips:

•

Add a cover image. Events with images get significantly more views. Use a photo that captures the vibe of your event, whether that's the venue, a past event or the activity itself.

•

Write for newcomers. Assume someone has never been to your kind of event before. What would they want to know? Tick the "newcomer friendly" option if your event welcomes first-timers.

•

Add tags and highlights. These help people discover your event when they're browsing by interest.

Manage your RSVPs

Once your event is published, people can RSVP directly from the event page. Here's what you can do as an organiser:

Attendee list

View everyone who's RSVP'd from your event dashboard. You can see names and total headcount at a glance.

Capacity limits

Set a maximum number of attendees if your venue has a limit. Once you're full, people can join the waitlist.

Check-in

On the day, use the check-in feature to track who actually shows up. Great for understanding your real turnout.

Send updates to attendees

Keep your attendees in the loop before and after your event:

Event updates

Changed the venue? Running a bit late? Send a broadcast message to everyone who's RSVP'd. They'll get an email notification.

Edit your event

You can update your event details any time. Changes are reflected immediately on the event page.

Automatic reminders

You don't need to chase people. The platform handles reminders automatically:

•

24 hours before: Attendees get an email reminder with all the event details.

•

1 hour before: A final heads-up so no one forgets.

•

Attendees can manage their own notification preferences, so you don't need to worry about over-communicating.

Tips for a great listing

•

Be specific about the location. "The big room above the café" isn't helpful. Include the full address and any access instructions.

•

Set expectations. Is it a sit-down talk or a hands-on workshop? Is it loud or quiet? Do people need to bring anything? The more context you give, the more comfortable people feel showing up.

•

Keep descriptions scannable. Use short paragraphs. Lead with the most important information. People skim.

•

Consider accessibility. Mention wheelchair access, hearing loops or any other accessibility features. This helps people decide if they can attend.

•

Recurring events? You can set up recurring events (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) so you don't have to recreate the listing every time.

Choosing a great venue

•

Accessibility matters. Is the venue accessible by public transport? Is there parking nearby? Is it wheelchair accessible? Mention all of this in your listing.

•

Match the venue to the vibe. A networking event works better in a space where people can move around. A talk needs seating. A workshop needs tables.

•

Consider the cost. Free venues (parks, community centres, libraries) can keep your event affordable and accessible to more people.
